 Old News/New News and Ideas:
Ben Oakley Ideas for Membership:
-- Ben found software to organize membership and sends out emails when time for renewal; would like to have a link to SSFTA website.
-- EIR submitted comment during public comment time.
-- As per Ben, the Fish and Game is more or less putting down job.
-- Kern COG planning transportation meeting. Hopefully to include Kern Wheelmen and Bike Bakersfield
      – March 31.

 Other Stuff:

-- Talked a bit about Jim’s article to the newspaper about a women’s response to our input.
-- Mission statement – Include the first 5 goals in the bylaws.
            - Raymond’s Mission Statement.
            - Bylaws
-- A while back trails in the valley did not allow bicycles. Back then, when the SSFTA was getting started, first as the “Mountain Wienies”, they felt like standing up for their rights for the trail.
-- Now, youth/members don’t want to volunteer – only socialize.
-- Maybe when new members become more involved without pressure of being an advocate, they will transform into becoming a more involved member and volunteer and advocate for mnt biking.
-- Jason thinks advocacy should be first in having a membership to the club.

 Medical Supplies:
-- Accidents are becoming more prevalent.
-- Base kits to include gloves, butterfly bandages, sterile pads and wraps.
-- Jason displays his handy little box of medical supplies from his red bag.
-- Maybe hold a central kit for our big gatherings.
-- Require first aid kit issue as guidance with membership renewal.
-- Try to get donations, maybe a link to our site. Get paper work made up for this guide for new members/renewals
-- Ken said he’d help us replenish. -- CPR & First Aid Qualifications

Liability Insurance:

-- Yearly insurance for club may be a good thing.
-- USA Cycling offers some coverage for $125/year.
-- IMBA offers some coverage for $350/year. --Whichever offers the best we should consider, -- Insurance for a Non Profit, -- Death of Jake Watson on “Practice Day”

** Tonight we should figure out if we want liability Insurance.
Jim says yes, since we keep growing, even though we’ve only bought it in the past for major events.
Ben thinks yeah as well.

-- Thoughts about what Homeowner’s Insurance would cover. Talk to an attorney.

-- Will probably go with USA Cycling.

 * Ben makes motion to purchase Liability Insurance through USA Cycling.
-- Emily Seconds that motion. -- “All in favor say Aye” – Everyone, -- “Those apposed say No” – no one.

* The motion is carried. Jim will write a check and send it in to USA Cycling.

February 12, 2008, SSFTA Meeting Minutes

Meeting Attendees:
Tim Strem Jason Smith Raymond Rodriguez Ben Oakley
Leon Graves Emily Georgeson Jim McWhorter Esteban Solano

Old News/New News and Ideas:

Ben Oakley Ideas for Membership:
-- Putting Tax ID number on Sponsorship packets for companies/people feel more comfortable donating.
-- Make sure our Charity is front and Center – Stewards of the Sequoia (or another group)
-- Think about who we want to showcase as a charity
-- Bike Bakersfield has Paypal to make minimum payment, but have the choice to make more while registering to be a member.
-- One membership renewal date for everyone. Leon had the same idea to do that. Great Idea.
-- On new membership cards specify renewal date as of Jan 09/10.

Ideas for Membership Drive:
-- 51 active members – make a goal to double it this year.
-- SSFTA key chain bottle opener – good idea.
-- Make SSFTA like business cards (like we had for the Rio Bravo Rumble 2 years ago). Have our weekly rides on the back of the card to pass out, or put on cars.
-- Have a meeting to socialize beyond the monthly board meeting so we can get more people out to socialize. Perhaps the club could by pizza and beverages are purchased by members.
* Jim thinks it’s a great idea. So, we should keep this board/business meeting on every second Tuesday of each month.
* Ben announces his March 8th party at his house for the bringing in of Daylight Savings.

Canyon CIR
-- Canyon CIR submittal. SSFTA should take a stand, but what position should we hold?
The SSFTA shouldn’t take such a “No” stance, but a position saying we will help develop a plan. As for this last submittal, they’re only looking for reviews to see whether or not they’re making an adequate assessment on the development. That’s all they’re looking for at this moment.
-- Should make a trail map of all the trails in the foothills to have.
-- Also, KernCOG (Kern Council of Governments) is planning transportation throughout Bakersfield for the future and they’re willing to take our thoughts into consideration.

-- Jim printed out copies for the Bylaws for the club.
-- Let’s come up with a mission statement for the club. People should brainstorm ideas to share and well take pieces to create one. Discuss at next meeting.

More News:
Keyesville
-- Pint glasses for awards, no 1st 2nd 3rd. Also, a glass for volunteers.
-- Beer permit from Sheriff is a go.
-- Bluegrass band for Saturday night.
-- Specialized is bringing 25 Women demo bikes
-- KRB Friday night for movie and bag pickup.
-- Trophies for the Trials we’ll be handling this year.
-- USA Cycling, Bionicon, MTBR, Decline all means of advertising for race.
** It’s really been a team event/planning. People are excited about Keyesville.

Old News
--
Dan Dunn will do the final artwork design for the club jersey for $180, we need to give him a good rough draft of what we want.
--Selling the jerseys: The club will pay for them initially, members can buy them at half price from the club, non-members will pay our cost. Champion is our targeted vendor.
--Prime Sponsors: These great supporters of the SSFTA will be printed on the jerseys at no charge as a thank you for years of continued support.
--Kern Wheelmen Race is drawing nigh

New News
--Dennis Beltran from San Jose is holding a "good ol' boy" road ride weekend in our area. He solicited advice and offered and invitation to ride with them when they come here in October. I offered the fact that John Stallone of Mountain River Adventures has shuttle options. The route: Bakersfield-Woody-Glennville-Alta Sierra- Kernville, next day Sherman Pass and out to the desert etc.
--Monthly Meetings will be "Board Meetings", everyone is invited. NEW: We will generate quarterly "meetings" formated (no business blah blah) for the entertainment and enjoyment of the general membership... a social type of thing. ...food too, it's all about the food you know.

My Space report by Jim McWhorter

Ride Reports: WNR, MNR, Cinco De Mayo Ride, Downtown Criterium, Bakersfield Triathlon, McGill Trail (May 20), Keyesville to the Bridge (27th), McGill de Marcel

Upcoming Rides:
--Oak Flat Campout, maybe Frog Meadow would be better (has water and trees, Oak Flat doesn't show up on the FS site) as reported by Rocky
--Solo 24 DVD movie night
--Wednesday Night BBQ

--Badger Gap has way too much poison oak in the upper parts of the route.
--The Kern Canyon Trail is in great shape due to spring time maintenance
--Keyesville needs to be checked for fallen trees after the recent windy days

Race Issues

--Keyesville sponsor packets will be made as soon as Tim finds the time to do it. Printed matter as well as an event DVD will knock their collective socks off and open the flood gates of benevolent sponsorships.
--Keyesville will be the 20th annual and poised for a big stink about it.
--Chip Timing is on the table and discussed. We need to research how much the equipment would cost v. hiring it done at $2500 per day or so.

-- Oak Flat Campout

-- Frog Meadow

-- Cow Flat to Breckenridge down Mill Creek

-- Side Note: American International Architect of Golden Empire with Wilson’s Roofing to sponsor Zac’s racing team. Used to be an idea for a race team for the public, now just for 5 persons; hope to have membership open up in the future.

-- SSFTA should be affiliated in some way or form.

 Land Access

-- Follow through with BLM for post ride conclusions.

-- Chris Horgan – get some funding for the meetings he attends.

-- Possible “Fun Ride” to raise money to support the land access; donation to Stewards of the Sequoias.

-- Chris is part of two different groups: The “Stewards of the Sequoia”, and also the “Friends of the Sequoia”.  Chris created the latter of the two, while he belongs to the non-profit Stewards.

-- The SSFTA ought to donate money to Chris and affiliated clubs to represent for us.

-- Talk about the donations to the Boy Scouts, and how we really need to donate for the purpose of fighting for our access to open trails.

-- Jim makes a motion to donate $500 to the Friends of the Sequoia. Zac seconds his motion. Motion carried.

-- SSFTA plans to donate another $500 down the road to the Friends of the Sequoia as well so Chris is able to keep traveling to meetings to represent our area.

 Keyesville

-- Sponsors still need to get some t-shirts.

-- Extra trophies to dedicated sponsors. First we need to see how many there are, and then possibly we could use the left over trophies for next years event.

-- Create a list of who we’d like to give trophies to.

-- Some sponsors should also receive a DVD.

-- Sponsors who still need t-shirts: Accurate Trenching, Action Sports, MRA, Griffin & Co., Wilson’s, Dewalt, Flascho, Dewar’s, KRB, Applied Technology, Rain 4 Rent, Honda shop.

-- Get together a package for the sponsors - - in some cases a DVD with shirts.

-- An idea would be to have a BBQ for continual sponsors.

-- Director for 2008: Jason is given the time to think about it.

Random Thoughts

-- Dan Dunn from Champion Company could be jersey suppliers.

-- We as a club could be as sponsor for jerseys. We could also offer an open donation to our sponsors to be on the jersey so we don’t take advantage of them.

-- Membership coordinator: should it be attached to the VP position, or another volunteer position? Leon does volunteer to be the membership coordinator to clean it up and hand it off to someone else later down the road when it’s organized.

-- Strategy for membership coordinator: Doesn’t have to attend meetings, but more a social person who would like a role in the club.
