Has been almost a week since my last post and I've had some improvement finally. Pain began to fade last Tues and has improved each day. I started with simply moving around on crutches for a few minutes at a time then rest because it still caused some pain, just not nearly as much as a week ago. On Tues, my wife still had to move injured leg to floor for me.

By Thurs I was able to move leg to floor by myself but I only attempt this when she's home in case I have a fall or something. Yesterday, I was able to sit on our couch w/out pain for the first time. Got a chance to watch the good TV again. I lasted about an hour and had to return to bed. My wife and kids have been great as they have been required to do everything for me. It sure is humbling to rely on others for everything and I appreciate and am grateful for others more than ever before.

Had a huge moment this morning when I was able to sit on the toilet for a BM. Woohoo!! Wife was happy. It was painful but worth it because it makes her life easier and she's now less likely to barf on a daily basis. Oh, and I also have been showering by myself while sitting in a lawn chair w/my leg sticking out of the shower on a foot rest. I really appreciate those daily things that I normally take for granted.

My coworkers really stepped up and we now have dinners lined up for the whole month of April. It's an honor to work w/such good people. I'd also like to thank my long time friend and riding partner, Mike Mason. Mike's wife, Kim, brought Frugatti's the day after I was released from the hospital and they both have checked up on Lola and me via phone calls and visits on a regular basis. Thanks to you both for being such good friends.

To the Doctor on Tues. Enjoy the ride...

Here's video of the jump I crashed on. I went a little faster, higher, and farther when I crashed, big mistake.

Geoff, yikes! I just read all the posts; how awful. We heard about your crash the day after it happened from Todd. SSFTA is a good group of people; good to hear everyone helping out and thinking about you. Hang in there! Melissa and Tim

Per Doctor yesterday it's healing like it should. I actually have 2 rods, one that goes into the ball at the top of femur and one down the whole length of femur. I don't remember them telling me this in the hospital due to the morphine. I'm including a pic taken yesterday and now I understand why all the pain. It looks gnarley! There is still a splintered piece of bone sticking out that they chose not to manipulate during surgery. It will merge w/femur by itself over time. Still improving some everyday. Today is 3 weeks out from crash and I sure miss my bike. I've gone out to garage a few times just to look at it and pat the seat w/some love. What a drag. Enjoy...

Today is 4 weeks since crash. I'm still in pain but much less. I can get around a lot more on crutches, but still not more than 15 minutes at a time or pain sets in. It's difficult and painful, but I can use toilet and shower by myself now. And yes, I still miss my bike... and I miss my freedom. Being caged up has not been easy. I'm anxious to return to work but that likely won't happen for another 2-4 weeks and on light/desk duty. I have to wait until I can get in and out of the car and drive comfortably. Grrrrrrrrr....

Augie, thanks for coming by to say Hi today. I enjoyed our visit and the tacos you brought. Much appreciated.

Enjoy...

Yesterday was 5 weeks out from crash. If you saw the xray I posted a few weeks ago, you know I have a large splintered piece of bone that was not reduced. Surgeons chose to leave it alone and allow it to merge w/the rest of my femur over time. Well, I can still feel that piece of bone through the skin when I rub that part of my leg w/my hand. It's less painful to the touch now and feels less sharp, as if a protective barrier has grown around it. It's painful, however, when I move certain ways and the pieces of bone shift. There are definitely some strange things going on inside my leg.

I've improved enough to at least get out of the house some. We just finished building a pool and new landscaping so sitting on a lounge chair in our backyard has been nice. The boys even swam last weekend even though the water was only 65. Too cold for me! I've also been to 2 of my son's baseball games now and that's been ok as long as I stay in the lounge chair w/a blanket under my leg. See attached link.

I'm glad I'm an athlete and was in decent shape when this injury occurred because strength and balance play a huge part in my life right now. I've learned to do a lot while standing on one leg and my kids laugh at me when they see me do the twist in the kitchen. I have to put the crutches down when I need my hands so if I grab the salami and cheese from the frig I have to do the one-legged twist to travel a few feet to the counter. I've provided some good entertainment for my boys on many occasions and sometimes I think they wish they had a broken leg too so they could have some cool crutches and a bionic leg. If they only knew!

My 2nd med appt. is Tues so I should get some new xrays taken, a report on how well my healing is going, and hopefully a return to work date.

I used to make fun of my wife and others who were on Facebook all the time. I could not understand why they'd want to communicate w/a bunch of people they went to school with and haven't seen in years. Well... due to my boredom I signed up for FB and they now make fun of me. I forgot about many people I really liked and it's been a lot of fun catching up w/them. Yes, go ahead and make fun of me cuz I'm a FB junkie now. Crazy! And look me up as "Geoff Welch."

Peace... is over rated.

If you don't get the newspaper, get a copy of today's. It includes an ariticle on the BMX Nationals held in Bako this weekend as well as the lack of a Bike Park in town. The time is ripe to go after the Bike Park idea.

Sup Man, You've been awfully quiet lately. Did you enjoy the movies I loaned you on your new 50" TV? I'm sure after watching the DVD's, they made you miss riding even more.

Loaned!!?? I thought they were a gift! Ha ha! I was trying not to continue to monopolize the forums with my sob story but since you asked I'll give an update. And thank you Alan for the awesome MTB DVD's! Yes, they did make me miss riding even more, but they gave me a small fix to my MTB addiction at the same time. I've watched them both several times. I appreciated you and Leon paying me a visit.

I was surfing the net yesterday and read about NHL player, Kurtis Foster, who shattered his left femur into 6 or 7 pieces a few years ago. It took him a year to recover enough to play pro hockey again and he actually played more minutes, earned more assists, and scored more goals after his injury than in any season prior. That was good to read and gave me even more confidence in a full recovery.

I had new xrays taken last week and they look very similar to the last ones. Only now you can see some bone growth in the gaps. Pain is still pretty crazy at certain times due to the severity of the break but still a lot better than a few weeks ago. The Doc tried to squeeze my thigh last week and I swatted his hand away cuz he went straight to the place where there is splintered bone. That place is still painful and I shocked him a little but he got the point! I'm still on crutches but can put up to 30 lbs. of weight on bad leg now. I'll be on crutches til at least June 8th and Doc will decide then what's next depending on my progress. I've learned to get around pretty good on the crutches but if I'm up for too long I still get fatigued and need a nap.

It drives me nuts to just sit around all day so it's been a goal to get some exercise every other day at least. So far I've been able to handle some light dumbell work while sitting on the couch, situps, pullups, and just in the last few days, pushups w/a little pain. I have to do most of this when my wife is out of the house cuz she gets on me for trying to do too much. I'm still not working and will find out next week if my time off continues or if I return on light desk duty. Bad thing is I still can bend my knee only about a 1/3 of norm and can't drive yet.

I'm able to help my wife more w/daily things like making the kids breakfast and lunch prior to them leaving for school, making my own meals, washing dishes, etc... so at least I'm not totally dependent on everyone still.

I'm stir crazy as hell. I miss riding. I miss playing outside w/my sons. I want to go out and plant some flowers. I just want to be doing, moving, playing, etc... Can you see me clench my teeth right now?? Grrrrrr...

Alan, I noticed you posted a pic on one of your posts, however, when I try it won't allow me to. How did you do it??

Enjoy the ride,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Glad to hear the recovery is ongoing...even if too slowly. Wish there was something we could do to help get you on the bike faster.

Regarding the picture, you should now be able to post the picture as an attachment . The attchment section is under the message body when posting. Previously that feature was not turned on, but now it is. Just remember to resize the pic so that it is under 512k.

Kevin
